Battling in the conditions for a chance to keep his card πŸ’ͺ

Chandler Phillips' solo second finish puts him in prime position with one event left in the #FedExCup Fall.

243rd TOUR start. First TOUR win.

After entering @Bermuda_Champ@twitter.com at 134th on the #FedExCup Fall, Adam Schenk breaks through and keeps his TOUR card through 2027!

Currently T3, @ahadwingolf@twitter.com entered this week at No. 147 in the #FedExCup Fall standings.

54-hole @Bermuda_Champ@twitter.com co-leader Braden Thornberry (@TBerryGolf@twitter.com) took a winding road to the PGA TOUR, but some things are worth the wait ⬇️

Thornberry burst onto the scene with a T4 finish at the 2017 FedEx St. Jude Classic as an amateur, shortly after winning the NCAA individual title as a college sophomore @OleMissMGolf@twitter.com. The Mississippi native turned pro in 2019 and finished as Q-School medalist that fall to earn full @KornFerryTour@twitter.com status. He seemed on the fast track to stardom.

But Thornberry took some lumps in his early days as a pro. He narrowly missed a PGA TOUR card after making birdie on three of his final four holes at the 2021 Korn Ferry Tour Championship, and he lost Korn Ferry Tour status at No. 109 on the following year's standings. He didn't hold any status on TOUR-sanctioned circuit in 2023.

Thornberry fought back to earn 2024 Korn Ferry Tour status via Q-School. After a steady if unspectacular campaign, he stormed back on the season's final day to win the Korn Ferry Tour Championship with a closing 66, moving from 51st to 16th on the Points List and securing his first PGA TOUR card.

This week, Thornberry's back is against the wall once again. He arrived in Bermuda at a distant No. 178 on the #FedExCup Fall standings, with the top 100 after next week's @TheRSMClassic@twitter.com earning exempt TOUR membership for 2026; Nos. 101-150 will retain conditional status. He needs a win in Bermuda just to move inside the top 100 with one event to play.

True to form at this time of year, Thornberry has risen to the occasion. He has opened with three sub-70 rounds at blustery Port Royal and shares the 54-hole lead with wily veteran Adam Schenk.

A strong Sunday in Bermuda could change the course of Thornberry's career, as did his performance on the final day of the 2024 Korn Ferry Tour season.

"I was able to win a bunch in college, but I don't know if I'd forgotten it or what, but it had been a while. Hopefully with that recent stuff at the end of last year, hopefully I can carry it over," Thornberry said Saturday. "I'm super excited."

"That's not what I thought was about to happen" πŸ˜‚
