#FotoVorschlag: Federleicht // Light as a feather

Meine #Hühner werden aktuell um viele #Federn erleichtert, sie #mausern gerade, was das Zeug hält, und die beiden alten #Hennen sehen ganz gerupft aus (wächst aber jetzt alles schön nach, wie man sieht). Dazu Wind und Regen und seit heute ist auch noch Stallpflicht angesagt wegen der Vogelgrippe. Die Hühnis haben es gerade echt nicht (feder)leicht.

My #chickens are a lot lighter now, as they're losing so many #feathers. They're in the middle of #moulting and especially the two older #hens look a bit scruffy (their feathers are growing back nicely though, as you can see). There's also rain and wind and as of today, they have to stay cooped up due to avian flu. Apologies for the pity party, I just wanted to ... shed some light on the daily struggles of our feathery friends. 😋

Die meisten Hühnerrassen haben vier Zehen pro Fuß, aber meine #Lachshühner haben fünf Zehen. Hier sieht man Cleos fünf Zehen deutlich, als sie erschrocken und schreiend in die Luft gesprungen ist, weil Stella sie mal wieder gepickt hat.

Jette is hitting puberty! 🤭
Her comb is growing and both the young #hens are almost the size of the adult #chickens. Maybe we'll get some eggs from her later in autumn or early winter 🤩

I haven't shared a #chicken update in a while! Here are the young ones, Cleo and Jette, doing a sphinx impression on top of our chicken playground on a rainy day 🤭

The four of them are now living as a group. The leader, Henna, is sort of a benevolent autocrat who leaves the little ones alone and doesn't mind them coming close. But her second, Stella, is still power-drunk and keeps bullying the underlings when they dare go near the food and snacks. Well. I guess it will stay that way until the little ones are grown up and fight back. 🤷 In the evenings, Cleo and Jette go inside the shelter themselves now, so we have established a new normal where I only have to check occasionally. Soon, we can get rid of the portable fence and build a prettier enclosure. 💅

I was trying to take a photo of a small and beautiful viper's burgloss that popped up in the garden and was photobombed by a curious Jette 😂

By the way, the four of them are in the same coop now and rub along okay together. The adult hens still bully the little ones whenever they're too close, but Cleo and Jette are feisty and curious and explore more and more. They occasionally break out some ninja moves to escape the larger bullies. 🤸🏼‍♀️ Unfortunately, they would rather sleep on top of the shelter instead of inside (where they get pecked if they are too loud and fidgety), so I still have to put them into the shelter myself each night.
