"The Department of Justice has removed a study showing that white supremacist and far-right violence “continues to outpace all other types of terrorism and domestic violent extremism” in the United States.

The study, which was conducted by the National Institute of Justice and hosted on a DOJ website was available there at least until September 12, 2025, according to an archive of the page saved by the Wayback Machine. Jason Paladino first reported that the study was removed. 404 Media noticed the removal after it was flagged by Daniel Malmer, a PhD student studying online extremism at UNC-Chapel Hill.

" 'The Department of Justice's Office of Justice Programs is currently reviewing its websites and materials in accordance with recent Executive Orders and related guidance,' reads a message on the page where the study was formerly hosted. 'During this review, some pages and publications will be unavailable. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.' "

Excerpt: "Rolling Stone reported in October 2024 that Trump and his team have been plotting a second-term takeover of the D.C. police for a long time — regardless of the actual level of unrest or street crime. The plotting extends far beyond the nation’s capital.
In recent months, according to government officials and other sources with knowledge of the situation, administration staff and lawyers have crafted detailed plans and menus of options for Trump to feed his desire for replicating and proliferating his militarized crackdowns — on #immigrants and #citizens alike — to different Democratic strongholds.

"National Guard troops are already mobilizing in D.C., and Trump has privately said, according to two sources familiar with the matter, that if he sees something that he feels crosses his line (like if street protests in the city grow too big or if he deems them a threat suddenly), he will gladly order larger numbers of troops to nation’s capital, as he did in Los Angeles earlier this year.

"Trump has insisted to administration officials that it’s ridiculous that troops like National Guard members are not allowed to conduct various forms of domestic law enforcement, sources add. The president and his administration to some extent have had their hands tied on this due to the #PosseComitatus Act — which prohibits using the military for domestic law enforcement — though that isn’t stopping them from actively exploring ways around the law. "Senator John Cornyn, Republican of Texas, said on Thursday that the F.B.I. had agreed to his request to help track down dozens of Democratic Texas state lawmakers who left the state to prevent a vote on a redistricting plan.

"The activation of federal agents could create a standoff between the Trump administration and state leaders in Illinois, where many of the absent #Democrats have taken refuge.

"It was not clear on Thursday morning whether federal agents had actually taken action in the case, or what role they might eventually play.

"Gov. JB Pritzker of Illinois scoffed at the idea that federal agents could be deployed against the Texas lawmakers present in his state, calling it 'a lot of grandstanding.'

" 'The reality is that all that he has said is that the F.B.I. has been authorized to locate the House Democrats — nothing more,' Mr. Pritzker told reporters at the Illinois State Fair on Thursday. 'I welcome the F.B.I. coming to the state,' he added. 'But they won’t be arresting anyone because there is no federal law that prohibits those Texas House Democrats from being here.'

"Mr. Pritzker has previously said that federal law enforcement agents might be used in an attempt to #intimidate lawmakers, even if the agents did not have cause to make arrests.

"Several of the #TexasDemocrats in Illinois said that as of Thursday morning, no federal agents had been seen or reported at the lawmakers’ hotel in St. Charles, about 25 miles west of Chicago.

"The whereabouts of the Texas lawmakers are widely known, but until now at least, they had considered themselves safe from arrest because they were far from the jurisdiction of Texas law enforcement agencies.

" 'I am proud to announce that Director #KashPatel has approved my request for the F.B.I. to assist state and local law enforcement in locating runaway Texas House Democrats,' Mr. Cornyn said in a statement.

"In his letter on Tuesday requesting the bureau’s assistance, Mr. Cornyn argued that the Democratic lawmakers might have violated state bribery laws by accepting money from outside groups to support their efforts to prevent a vote in the Texas House on a redrawn political map.

"No criminal warrants have actually been filed against the lawmakers in Texas. The speaker of the Texas House has issued civil warrants, saying that the Democrats violated rules of attendance for that chamber,but those warrants have not been considered enforceable outside the state during previous legislative walkouts."

"The Trump #TaxBill would steer tens of billions of dollars to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for #detention capacity, employee bonuses, and to hire new agents. It would supercharge ICE’s ability to conduct raids, and allow the administration to expand the campaign of terror it’s waging on immigrants in Los Angeles to blue cities around the country.

"ICE’s aggressive worksite raids and courthouse arrests throughout the Los Angeles area have, of course, inspired a wave of protests — giving the president an excuse to send the U.S. military to a Democratic city, something he’s long fantasized about, while inspiring demonstrations across the country.

" 'This bill would give Donald Trump the ability to do what he’s doing [in California] on a scale we really haven’t seen before,' says #DavidBier, the director of immigration studies at the #CatoInstitute, a libertarian think tank. 'He will be able to replicate this militarized approach to Los Angeles across maybe dozens of American cities.'

"For Trump and key officials, including immigration-crackdown policy architect #StephenMiller, this is exactly the point, with Los Angeles currently being used as an autocratic staging area. They want to replicate this militarized, ramped-up blitz of ICE raids, backed by the U.S. armed forces, in several other Democratic strongholds — particularly if larger-scale protests spread to other cities.

"As Rolling Stone previously reported, the president and his senior officials have already mapped out near-term plans for how to further ratchet up the already tense blitz of ICE operations, especially in the coming days in Los Angeles, where the federal agents are now being protected by Trump’s literal troop deployment to the city, against the wishes of Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom.

"On Saturday evening, Donald Trump announced that he was deploying 2,000 California National Guard troops to quell anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles. He did so using a rarely used law that allows the president to take control of a National Guard if there is a “a rebellion or danger of a rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States.” This is against the wishes of Governor Gavin Newsom, who has said that the troops will only inflame tensions. Protests continued throughout Sunday night and seem likely to escalate on Monday.

"This is a calculated attempt by the Trump administration to provoke a conflict. They hope to show cities in chaos in order to justify accelerating 'deportations.' Even though deportations remain stubbornly popular, approval over their methods is slipping, and the images of ICE agents raiding restaurants, immigration hearings, and schools undercuts the narrative about deporting criminals. #StephenMiller is reportedly angry at the 'slow' pace of arresting immigrants without due process and sending them off to brutal prison camps in foreign countries to which they have no association, like El Salvador, Libya, and South Sudan, and wants to speed them up to reach a quota of 3,000 a day. But to do that, they need to demonstrate greater urgency. They likely picked California because of the state’s size and prominence, and to undercut any attempt at states bucking or resisting immigration enforcement.

"This is an incredibly worrying step in the country’s march toward authoritarianism. The fact that the police are shooting rubber bullets at reporters is equally disturbing, as it seems clear that law enforcement will side with the federal authorities. We can’t rest complacently and assume that 'it can’t happen here.' It can and it is. And U.S. history offers plenty of past examples, with state militia and federal troops having been deployed against protesters as early as the 19th century. Back then, both were used to put down labor disputes and force striking workers back to work. Major strikes such as the #StrikeOf1877, the #GreatSouthwestStrike of 1886, and the #PullmanStrike in 1894 all ended by either federal troops’ or state militias’ force.

"At the turn of the 20th century came the massacres of African Americans. In 1917, strikes and labor disputes in East St. Louis, Illinois, erupted into one of the most violent race riots in U.S. history. African Americans fought back against white attackers, and the Illinois National Guard was called in to restore peace—but they chose in most cases to join in on the attacks or at the least, just stood back and allowed them to happen. Anywhere between 40 and 150 Black people died, and thousands more were left homeless. During the #TulsaMassacre in 1921, the Oklahoma National Guard disarmed Black citizens trying to defend themselves and marched them into detention camps, even after white rioters had commandeered planes from the local airfield and dropped bombs on their homes—an unprecedented act."

"Insurrectionists beat cops with flag poles, crushed them with riot shields, tased them in the neck, and spat on them during the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. But when President Donald Trump claimed on Monday that he has no tolerance for 'insurrectionists' who clash with police officers, he wasn’t talking about the 1,500 rioters he pardoned upon assuming office earlier this year; he was talking about people in Los Angeles, California, protesting his administration’s anti-immigration actions.

"Speaking to reporters outside of the White House on Monday, the president claimed that demonstrators opposing sweeping ICE raids in L.A. were 'professional agitators, they’re insurrectionists, they’re bad people,' and that 'they should be in jail.'

"It’s clear that while there is public unrest in Los Angeles, the city is not in the throes of an active insurrection against the federal government — a claim Trump and his allies have repeatedly made since protests began on Friday. 'An insurrection against the laws and sovereignty of the United States,' White House Deputy Chief of Staff #StephenMiller wrote on X in response to videos of protesters blocking a highway. The president added on Sunday that 'a once great American City, Los Angeles, has been invaded and occupied by Illegal Aliens and Criminals […] now violent, insurrectionist mobs are swarming and attacking our Federal Agents to try and stop our deportation operations.'

"Unless the president invokes the #InsurrectionAct — an 1807 law that allows the president to deploy the military or the National Guard for the purpose of domestic law enforcement — members of the guard would be restricted largely to the protection of federal buildings.

"Local and state lawmakers have also stated unequivocally that the tensions in the city increased severely after Trump federalized National Guard troops for deployment in L.A. without the request or consent of California officials. Local officials in Los Angeles say that while there have been instances of protesters clashing with police, vandalizing property, and burning vehicles, the majority of such confrontations have been isolated, taken place at night, and — according to L.A. Police Chief Jim McDonnell — are not exemplary of 'the people that we see during the day who are legitimately out there exercising their First Amendment rights to be able to express their feelings about the immigration enforcement issue.'

"Trump, who resisted activating the National Guard on #January6 to quell the violence being carried out by his supporters against law enforcement, has now warned that disrespect toward law enforcement will be met with a show of force. 'Nobody’s going to spit on our police officers. Nobody’s going to spit on our military,' the president told reporters Monday, before posting on Truth Social: 'IF THE SPIT, WE WILL HIT.'

The administration’s top law enforcement officials are also warning against aggression toward law enforcement. “Hit a cop, you’re going to jail… doesn’t matter where you came from, how you got here, or what movement speaks to you,' FBI Director #FashPatel wrote. 'If the local police force won’t back our men and women on the thin blue line, we @FBI will.'

"Deputy FBI Director #DanBongino added that the agency would 'be investigating and pursuing all available leads for assault on a federal officer.'

" 'We will not forget. Even after you try to,' Bongino added.

"The statements ring a little hollow when one remembers that just a few months ago the president pardoned not only individuals who spit on cops, but who outright assaulted them. Miller, Patel, Bongino, and other administration figures have largely excused their actions and demonized the #BidenAdministration for pursuing legal action against the rioters. "
