#Faroese word for shell - #skel - sounds the same as in #English as both comes from Proto-Germanic *skaljō.

There are quite a few idioms related to #shells in Faroese:

* "sum skeljar" - said of bone-dry hay - literally means "like #shells"
*"liggja í skeljum" (lie in shells) is used when referring to something among other bits and pieces

Some favourites from a recent visit to Museum Belvédère. We especially wanted to go to see the "Always the Sea" exhibition featuring works by Faroese painter Sámal Joensen-Mikines, but there were also some other works that I really liked.

Artists:
1-4: Samal Joensen-Mikines
5: Jan: Altink
6-7: Egbarta Veenhuizen
8-9: Jan Mankes
10: Margriet van Weenen

#Germany has for centuries been a conglomerate of many tribes. The neighbour tribe of Alemannen gave the #French name Allemagne.

#Polish name #Niemcy comes from *němьcь - speechless - since German is not mutually intelligible with #Slavic languages.

#Faroese word for #Germany is #Týskland. It derives from Old High German work #diutisc (of or pertaining to the people or tribe). In #OldNorse it became þýðskr/þjóðskr and later formed #Tyskland in Scandinavian languages.

The #Faroese government's report was never made public but, very disappointingly, when it announced the conclusion (some ten months later), it was that an annual 'limit' of 500 white-sided #dolphins would be set.

The opportunity for the local government to stop the #killing had been missed and the 'limit' was far above the usual number of these dolphins taken each year (apart from the appalling take in 2021).

#Spectators of the #B36 Tórshavn – #NSÍ Runavík match (3:0) in August 2015 were given #tickets for the game against FC Suðuroy.

#Faroese word for ticket is #atgongumerki (atgonga - admittance + merki - sign, stamp, badge).

#Oyndarfjørður (pop. 126), mentioned in #Hundabrævið, was isolated until 1974 when a #road finally arrived.

The village name in #Faroese derives from the man’s name #Oyvindur.

The #church, a traditional wooden church with a #turf roof, was built in 1838.

At the beach you can see two rocking stones called #Rinkusteinar.

#Hestur (pop. 15) is a #Faroese village on the island of Hestur. Its name refers to the ridge of the #island which resembles the back of a #horse - #hestur in #Faroese.

In 1919 a fishing accident resulted in the deaths of one-third of #Hestur's men. Following that accident and to fight the depopulation of the village a swimming #pool was built - it was opened in 1983.

The local #post office opens just once a week for only 90 minutes.
