Te Pu O Te Wheke. Puwheke maunga near the mouth of the Rangaunu harbour in the Far North. According to Maori legend Puwheke is a giant octopus that once blocked the mouth of the harbour and was turned into stone. If you ever visit the maunga you will see it has 8 legs at its base. #photography#aotearoa#farnorth#MāoriLegend
This is a very distinctive sub-species of Pseudopanax lessonii (Houpara) which only grows in the Cape Reinga/ North Cape area at the northern tip of the North Island. We were given this precious example by a friend who was given a few from a native plant propagation and preservation project associated with Kaitaia High School. It is distinguised from the five fingered leaves of the Houpara by having only three fingers. #aotearoa#farnorth#nativeplants
