"The issue of missing victim-informed assessments matters because it’s symptomatic of a wider problem. For decades, the underlying assumption of both the public and the judicial system has been straightforward and seemingly logical: that stopping-violence programmes stop violence.

But how is that measured? And what if the system has been asking the wrong people for proof?"

The $24m 'illusion' of programmes to stop family violence

Official reports are being signed off as completed without anyone checking if the victims are actually safe, new report show.

A woman reported to police a man’s past & likely further violent actions toward children & was recorded as ‘vexatious’. When the man then assaulted a child the first suspect was the mother. Reporting on the child’s death focused on two villains: child protection services & the mother.

It’s so much easier to blame a woman for the actions of a violent man. ‘Look what she made him do’, ‘she could have prevented it’, etc etc.

Should be shocking. Is too familiar.

* The role of loss within society
Andreas Reckwitz 's book 'Loss, A Modern Predicament, The first comprehensive study of the role of loss within society", 2025 explains loss not only from a psychological perspective, but also from a sociological one.

"Loss has come to occupy a central position in late modernity – whether in the consequences of climate change or the entrenchment of negative expectations about the future, the ‘losers’ of post-industrial modernisation or the collective processing of ‘historical wounds’ and of who is acknowledged as the victims and perpetrators of these crimes, in a heightened psychological awareness of vulnerability, in political populism, a nostalgia for things past, or programmes of resilience."

A powerful photographic exhibition by Helen Grace titled "Justice for Violet and Bruce. Currently on display at the Campbelltown Arts Centre as part of the Biennale.

From Helen's website: "In 1976 Violet and Bruce Roberts were convicted of the murder of Eric Roberts, Violet’s husband and Bruce’s father, at Pacific Palms near Taree in regional New South Wales, after enduring years of domestic violence. The trial was short and relatively cursory but by 1980 the public outcry against the injustice of their imprisonment was spearheaded by a courageous Sydney activist group Women Behind Bars. Violet and Bruce’s release from jail on 15 October 1980 turned on the recognition of the defence of provocation in cases of murder where there had been long-term domestic violence and it led to changes in the New South Wales Crimes Act."

CRACKDOWN ON PALESTINIAN CHANT IS HARSHER THAN CRACKDOWN ON VIOLENT MEN

In Queensland, we have a government more worried about cracking down on a slogan than cracking down on domestic violence perpetrators. And we have a police force that recently decided to dump its specialist domestic violence unit because domestic violence (aka men's violence against women) is not 'core policing business'.And this morning we have a woman and her baby daughter murdered and their …
