On this day each year, I remember the life of my great, great-grandfather Cain Mayer. On 7th Feb 1881, he lost his life along with 23 others. They were killed by an explosion around 3.10 am at Chatterley Whitfield Colliery, Hanley. Cain died trying to rescue the pit ponies.
Great, great grandfather Cain was 39 years old, married with 11 children. Although he returned to the surface at around 2.30 am - he went back down the pit to retrieve the ponies ๐ #FamilyHero #familyhistory
