How to Spot Fake Pet Medicine and Keep Your Animals Safe
Alan's Persian tabby cat, Smokey, almost died after being given a counterfeit flea treatment bought online. Although Alan had used the same brand, Frontline Plus, for years, this time the medication was fake, leading to Smokey becoming violently ill. After rushing Smokey to the vet, scans revealed a... Modernising dietary supplement regulations | Beehive.govt.nz
https://www.beehive.govt.nz/release/modernising-dietary-supplement-regulations
The first steps in modernising the regulation of exported dietary supplements have been announced today by Associate Health Minister Casey Costello, Food Safety Minister Andrew Hoggard, and Trade Minister Todd McClay.
“We are using the Therapeutic Products Act Repeal Bill to address some long-term issues for New Zealand companies wanting to export dietary supplements,” Ms Costello says.
“In repealing the Therapeutic Products Act, we have a chance to put sensible legislation in place for natural health products, including dietary supplements. This will take time, as we will consult with the sector. However, we still have an opportunity to make improvements now to support our exporters.”
Opinion
The supplement industry is somewhat unregulated in NZ (and a lot of other countries): there is no need to show efficacy or safety. The regulations typically deal with listing ingredients and introducing some boundaries about the health claims of these supplements. This mostly means not having any real quality control, thus leading consumers to waste money, time and resources on useless products.
Unfortunately the government indicated that they would be going in the direction of reducing quality controls and consumer protections in this space, rather than improving it.
AG1 supplement created by Kiwi businessman under scrutiny for liver harm reports – NZ Herald
The US Food and Drug Administration reveals it’s received 118 adverse event reports this year alone from users of a supplement previouslymarketed by big-name influencers as “made in NZ”.
Now, thecompany employs about 300 staff and according to Ashenden has 700,000 customers – but there’s little scientific evidence to support its efficacy, nor to say whether it’s safe. The first clinical “pilot study” was published in October, tracking the biomarkers of 15 AG1 users and a 15-strong control group for just four weeks.
A lot of people assume that supplements industry is regulated – it is not! And it always baffles me that people think that taking random concoctions would improve health rather than impact it in a negative way…
