लॉर्ड लिनलिथगो 1936 से 1943 तक भारत के ब्रिटिश वायसराय थे । उन्होंने सन् 1942 में लगे कुम्भ–मेले का भ्रमण करना चाहा । उन्होंने महामना पं– मदनमोहन मालवीय य1861–1946द्ध के साथ हवाई जहाज में बैठकर ऊपर से मेले का निरीक्षण किया । मेले में जनसमूह का जो सागर उमड़ा था, उसे दे•कर उन्हें बड़ा आश्चर्य हुआ और उन्होंने मालवीय जी से ङ्क्तश्न किया– मालवीय जी इस स्थान पर एकत्रित होने के लिए जो निमंत्रण भेजे गए होंगे, उसमें कापफी /नराशि लगी होगी । आपका अंदाजा क्या है कि इसके संगठनकर्ताओं को कितना •र्च करना पड़ा होगा मालवीय जी ने हँसकर जवाब दिया– सिपर्फ दो पैसे । लॉर्ड लिनलिथगो ने कहा कि पंडित जी, क्या आप मजाक तो नहीं कर रहे हैं ? मालवीय जी ने अपनी जेब से एक पंचांग निकाला और कहा कि इसकी कीमत दो पैसे है । इसी से लोग जानकारी ङ्क्ताप्त कर लेते हैं कि कौन–सा •ास दिन और समय मेले के लिए पवित्र होगा और स्नान के लिए यहाँ अपने आप चले आते हैं । ङ्क्तत्येक आगंतुक को व्यत्तिफगत निमंत्रण भेजकर यहाँ बुलाने की जरूरत नहीं पड़ती ।
