My 10 yo got #FairyRing for her birthday so we tried it out tonight. It was pretty fun. And even though I dont win many games, I did pretty well at Fairy Ring!

Needless to say, the sudden appearance of circles of mushrooms has lead to many myths and legends, including an association with fairy folk, especially in Scotland.
At this time of year, fairy rings appear. These are rings of mushrooms or fungii which start out as a single spore. As the underground mycelium grows outwards, it depletes the soil mutrients in the middle and these parts die off, creating a circular-shaped organism within the ground. This shape only becomes visible when they send up their fruiting bodies, which we call mushrooms, in Autumn.

Happy solstice, the traditional time for the festival of Litha. In 2023, I made this mixed-media artwork inspired by Pagan tradition.
