The turmoil on the #BC right is not random. It is what happens when #FirstPastThePost forces entire movements into one party and punishes voters for choice.
#ProportionalRepresentation would let parties stand on their own instead of tearing each other apart.

Fair Vote Canada

Available now to teachers everywhere and developed in Ontario Canada.

A Fair Vote? Rights, Responsibilities, and Decision-Making in a Democracy is an exciting new resource for Grade 5 Social Studies teachers, which was developed by the Elementary Teachers of Toronto and Fair Vote Canada.

This resource supports Strand B of the Social Studies curriculum on the Role of Government and Responsible Citizenship. The curriculum resource invites students to consider alternatives to our First-Past-the-Post voting system. Consisting of three lessons with accompanying slideshows, it concludes with students holding a mock Citizens' Assembly to determine what changes could be made to our voting system.

@SnowyCA Capitulation Carney strikes again! This guy sure knows how to jettison all those strategic votes from the left.

#Carney is openly handing the next election to the #Conservatives having helped pave way for their authoritarian fascist rule by embracing austerity.

Strategic voting in #Canada is a joke, just like the entire FPTP voting system. Without voting reform, Canada is doomed to follow #Poilievre into facism while continuing to isolate and vilify the left.

Not my Canada, not my Prime Minister.

Proportional Representation Rally, Waterloo Town Square, 1:30pm on Sunday 14 September 2025

On Sunday September 14, there will be a non-partisan rally planned by local organizers at Waterloo Town Square (Uptown Waterloo) to show support for Proportional Representation. The rally theme is Better Late Than Never.

The rally begins at 1:30 with time to gather, and make posters to show support for PR.

Speeches at 2:00 PM will be from:

  • Aislinn Clancy (MPP for Kitchener-Centre and Deputy Leader of the Green Party of Ontario)
  • Mike Morrice (former MP for Kitchener-Centre)
  • Mike Schreiner (MPP for Guelph and leader of the Green Party of Ontario)
  • Fair Vote Canada

and others.

Now is the time to speak up! Although Justin Trudeau broke his often-repeated promise to Canadians that the 2015 election would be the last under the first-past-the-post system, there is still strong support for the idea – even among those in power. After stepping down as Liberal leader, Trudeau shared that his one regret leading up to the 2025 election was not being able to change the way we elect our governments in this country  1 . Mark Carney has also spoken positively about electoral reform and has shared openness to addressing “those more structural issues in our democracy” 2 .

We are rallying to show that Canadians from across the political spectrum have not forgotten this broken promise, and that now is the time to act. More than ever, we need a strong democracy, with elected officials who reflect the will of the people, and where every citizen’s vote counts equally. We hope that you will join us!

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out, anytime.

Thank you,

Waterloo Region for Proportional Representation

This piece articulates the advantages of ranked choice voting (one kind of proportional representation) far more clearly than I could.

"But while RCV might be strictly non-partisan, it is decidedly pro-voter – and almost always produces a more positive, issue-focused campaign that looks to drive up turnout and appeal to as many people as possible. A ranked-choice campaign rewards engagement and encourages coalitions; it’s a race where instead of tearing down opponents, candidates point out areas of agreement and ask to be a voter’s second choice.

Voters love RCV and find it easy to use. According to a new SurveyUSA poll of New York voters, 96% said their ballot was easy to fill out. More than three-quarters of voters want to keep or expand RCV. And 82% said they had taken advantage of RCV and ranked at least two candidates. (These numbers are similar across RCV elections, and a powerful rejoinder to critics who insist, despite evidence to the contrary, that it’s too confusing.)"
