“Suppose you're sitting next to someone at a dinner party who you've never met. How do you begin a really genuine conversation?

“I have two questions under those circumstances. The first is, well, tell me about your life. The other one is, I say it this way, I say sometimes when I'm trying to get to know somebody, I ask them, if you weren't doing what you're currently doing, what else would you be doing that made you really happy?

“Find out what their alternate universe is. That's always a really great conversation.”

Today will be a long day, doing some of my favourite things. First, a farmers market trip. Then this afternoon, #facilitating a #writing group for the yearlong writing course I’m teaching, then facilitating the #trans and #nonbinary #narrativetherapy practitioner group, which will have a couple new members joining. (Yay!) Then breakfast burritos for dinner. My pain is high, but this is my favourite kind of work so I’ll medicate and do my best and I’m looking forward to it anyway.

We often use the words “#coaching,” “#mentoring,” “#teaching,” and “#facilitating” informally. We may say that we're being coached on how to become a better golfer, or that the person managing the agenda in a meeting is the meeting's facilitator. But once we investigate these practices, we discover that each has characteristics [...], and that our casual uses of those words were probably incorrect in their eyes.

Comparing Facilitation, Coaching, Mentoring and Teaching

When to use Facilitation, Coaching, Mentoring or Teaching We often use the words “coaching,” “mentoring,” “teaching,” and “facilitating” informally. We may say that we're being coached on how to become a better golfer, or that the person managing the agenda in a meeting is the meeting's facilitator. But once we investigate these practices, we discover that each has characteristics that are formally defined by professional organizations related to them, and that our casual uses of those words were probably incorrect in their eyes.
