Over the past decade or so, part of how I've taught myself some photography (typically with phone camera and occasionally with added lenses, I don't think my DSLR could do macro well tbh) is through one simple act: facing my fears of spiders and creepy crawlies. I've actually grown to love spiders, saved 4 carpenter bees last year and had them crawling on me, picked up a jumping spider in my hands to bring outside even last summer! This is all wild because just 10 years ago I would be screaming bloody murder over the sight of most insects.
Well, I keep noticing these guys hanging out at the pool. At first I thought it was so odd then found them interesting. This evening, this fellow was taking a little break and let me get up close and personal for a little shoot!
From there I took to the interwebs to research. What I found out is that these guys, yellow paper wasps, are docile, defensive rather than aggressive, and their water obsession? That's actually the little worker dudes gathering droplets of water to cool their nests and to help hydrate their small colony, typically of around a couple dozen fellow paper wasps.
So cool! These little nature architects use natural resources for their own HVAC systems in the desert! How freaking cool is that?!
