@Old_IT_geek @cheryanne @MsDropbear42 @captainb Well, seems this grumpy little fangball now has one less thing about which to moan. Though ofc madmonk & trumble remain arseholes til their last breaths for what they did to the NBN [& so much else too, obvs], & though it's been too stupid-many years to reach this point, finally there is reason to allow oneself a little grin...

For reference, my years-old now-superseded #fraudband #FttN achieved a best of ~39 / 7 Mbps.

I sincerely wish & hope that all remaining victims of those ghastly Liebs & Nuts can similarly gain this QoL lift, absobloodylutely ASAP! 🤞 🤞 🤞

#NBN #FttP

Tis now 13 hrs til the #NBN Tech is supposed to arrive to do the #FttN to #FttP doings. All attempts i made over the past several days to get to speak to an actual NBNCo human, have failed. These turds continue their years-old practice of actively discouraging & avoiding direct public communication. I assume we dirty proles smell too offensively for their delicate sensibilities. Their website remains useless as ever, with no phone# info. They merely have a Contact Us web-form, which i duly used, but ofc they have ignored it. My parallel efforts with my actual ISP, with whom i initiated the upgrade, & who then triggered the NBN booking, claim to be similarly hamstrung, wrt actual human-to-human contact. As advised by my ISP, since triggering the upgrade process, NBN have sent me a total of three automated SMSs, the first being info-only, the other two requiring me to reply with binary numbers as to if i am continuing or cancelling the Saturday appt... no opportunity for me to interact with a human. Fucken bastards.

Thus, now this close to the door knock, i still have not been able to decide if i wish to proceed [for the price of potentially contracting
#Covid19 from a possibly unvaccinated unmasked peep, AND/OR endure mud & grease tramped thru my home if they refuse to de-boot at the front door], or abandon it & remain evermore on fraudband [for the benefit of not endangering my health & carpets].

I fucken hate NBNCo. Fucken bastards.
🤬🖕
In three days' time, notionally, i seem to be a chance of jumping from 39 Mbps ⬇️ to 420 Mbps ⬇️. Now excited & scared. 😱

#nbn #FttN ➡️ #FttP

For several months https://www.nbnco.com.au/residential/upgrades/more-fibre#checkaddress has been telling me that around September my house might finally have #FttP available as an upgrade option for me, instead of my shitty 700m of #FttN rotted copper. I just checked it again now.

Unfortunately, we can’t upgrade you under this program at this time.

If madmonk & trumble were on fire, i'd not squat over them & piss, but i would seriously consider other options...

Upgrade to nbn’s full fibre | nbn

Recent email from my ISP advising of yet another price rise imminent, for my shitty #FTTN fraudband service. The new price is still affordable, yet i am incensed by it, given my 700m of rotted copper gives me 37/7 on a very good day, but more typically ~32/5.

So i've decided to challenge it by doing my first bit of active competition-hunting in many years, with a view to actually changing if i find decent looking candidates. I realise i shan't get any better performance til #FttP becomes available here, but getting a much lower price given the shit speeds is now desirable as a point of stubborn principle.

Initial look... two well-known comparator sites:

  • https://www.finder.com.au/broadband-plans ... Flip NBN Family - Seniors Plan ... 50/17/Unlimited.
  • https://www.whistleout.com.au/Broadband/Guides/best-australian-nbn-plans ... Buddy Telco ... 49/16/Unlimited.
  • Another time i shall do my detailed research into both these, but my initial #AskFedi question is... who the hell are Flip and Buddy? Anyone here with experience of them pls?

Peeps in #Australia. Are there any realtime or up to date latency benchmarks for internet connections, particularly #nbn #FTTN and #FTTP?

Alternatively what kind of latency are you getting and what #ISP and connection type are you connected to?

Right, now the #NBN modem has its own #UPS so even if the power goes out and the local #FTTN node dies, at least my local network won't have issues. And as a bonus, TWO alarms during a power failure.

Recently "refreshed" an old spinning-rust tower pc of winXP/7 vintage, with a purge then installation of #Fedora #KDE    . This pooter has no #BlueTooth nor #WiFi inside, & i didn't feel motivated enough to investigate specs of card/s i'd need to buy & install, so i chickened out & just bought a cheap USB WiFi dongle. After the #KFedora40 install & tweaking, i wanted to bung both #Floorp  & #ZenBrowser browsers on it.

This project is only limping along.

    • the USB dongle, supposedly good for 150 Mbps [which is >>> my available #NBN #Fraudband #FttN 37 Mbps on a good day], is giving me less than 1 Mbps. Have not yet tested to ascertain if it's the dongle's fault, or instead a WiFi blackspot in my house where i've set this tower. Sigh.
    • neither Floorp nor ZenBrowser will launch, regardless of me placing the extracted tarball files with the executable in /opt/, or in my Downloads directory, or in my user's ~/bin, each of which are in my $PATH. I know it's not bad files, coz they work fine when tested in VMs in my main pooter. I also know it's not #SELinux [which i hate with a passion] 's fault, coz i tested with it fully disabled too, but still no joy. Grrrr.

    Sassen frassen rassen.

@bastardsheep D or E would have been convert the #NBN #FTTP to a #FTTN project and wreak the lot. Putting Australia in the technology backwater for 10 years and now trying to play catch-up....
