While overall I really enjoyed the narrative aspect of VII Rebirth, I'm very confused on why the party would trust Cloud alone with anyone, after Cloud has his intermittent murdering anyone around him because he's possessed again thing. In fact this is the only narrative aspect I dislike so far.
The ending is pretty good, I would've enjoyed it so much more if I'm not so tired from the final final final final final final final final final form of the final boss.
Cloud in the original had lots of reasons to be a bit not quite right, now we are adding a multiple parallel universe and conversing with one specific dead into the mix. Which... He's handling really well, actually.
But also we are not past disc 1 yet. Next game will be a scope hell. As if Rebirth isn't one already.
This isn't a spoiler so much as a comment that the final final final final final final final final final formal of Rebirth is the second most stupid main boss fight in living memory.
Drakengard 3 where it ended with a rhythm game out of nowhere, and you were supposed to hit a final note on a faded out black screen is still worse.
Somehow I found my favourite thing about the game so far is this particular brother sister relationship with Cloud and Yuffie, that didn't feel all that strong before.
The the whole Reeve's claim that he stole the key because he felt a secretly crushing temple is the level of danger reserved for the Turks not a civilian. I can believe it, I can also believe even a good guy in Shinra just casually normalise throwing their own subordinates to pointless deaths as you'd expect anyone running a human mako farm.
Ok let me try to understand this because wtf just happened.
The temple itself collapse into black materia. So far so good. Aeris took the black materia, then for some reasons gave it back to Cloud so it ended up straight to Sephiroth (not in original) then Cloud and Aeris both got yeeted off a cliff.
Then the Zack Is Alive timeline the world is ending, which has this segment that's solidly one of the most terrifying thing I've ever seen, the slum crowd happily have a market fair and giving away sweet biscuits as they waited their deaths within hours. The level of calm jollyness is going to give me nightmares. Aeris behaves weirdly and tells Cloud she likes him, Cloud's response is wtf is wrong with you, Aeris gives Cloud her white materia and threw him out of that world as that world dies.
Then per Sephiroth we are having a FFXIV Ascian moment, where the party's first game resulted in parallel universes being formed but all of them would return to the main line which is the original game I think? But now Cloud has white materia from a different parallel universe that he wasn't supposed to have in original game.
But also what is even the black whispers? They are allies of Sephiroth who tried to maintain the original's timeline, but Sephiroth doesn't want the original timeline because he was implied to be defeated, but then Sephiroth also don't want a new timeline but also who are the white whispers.
Why is the black materia such good colour coord to Aeris in general
Wtf just happened
Here's the thing about Cetra's lore that I missed in the past. They are actually kinda awful people. I'm unsure how much they took an active role in depriving Gi people of death permanently out of racial hatred, and also tbh maybe the war against just about anyone they interacted with was the cultural norm at the time.
Consider in some ways Sephiroth and Aeris are (science fucked) half siblings, Aeris never really had much to do with indepth Cetra cultural practices because she's so disconnected with it. Meanwhile Sephiroth read a few Cetra books and decided nuking the planet is a great idea. A very very Barret-Avalanche solution.
That whole mural of the temple thing. Can't exactly say it's non-Cetra smearing the Cetra when they pretty much admitted all of above.
I really like the mood shift of Temple of Ancients. In here
Barret is subdued.
Aeris is sombre.
Yuffie is sincerely nice.
Cloud is axe-mad.
Given the culture Mandela's Effect about FFVII, a lot of these is what new players would expect. But really if anything it reminded me on how irreverently trollish Aeris normally is, and Cloud is pretty normal if not slightly awkward.
Third game is gonna be so depressing if this follows the original, because post Aeris's death the entire game just took such a turn for the everything are more awful than just a dystopia. It went from terrorist friends escape to a picnic and kicking shit, to something that's just struggling to get by another hour.
I still haven't figured out what exactly is Tseng and Aeris's relationship, decades later.
Also lol this description is adult-horror so much harder as now, considering how over the top the Turks are. I think Cessnei is the only normal person working for him, and she's 15.
