The #SchweizerMilchkuranstalt (Swiss Milk Cure Institute) building in #Magdeburg, captured this afternoon for the last day of #MonochromeMarch.

The phenomenon of Milchkuranstalten (milk cure institutes) in Germany was part of a late 19th- and early 20th-century health movement, inspired by Swiss traditions. These institutes promoted the therapeutic benefits of fresh milk, particularly for urban residents suffering from the stresses of industrialization and poor city air. In Magdeburg, several such institutes were established in 1886, becoming popular destinations that offered not only milk cures but also peaceful, green settings for relaxation and recovery.

The original wooden building of the Schweizer Milchkuranstalt no longer exists. The structure you see here was originally a garden house, erected by a local chocolate industrialist in 1872. In 1999, it was restored for a horticultural show and relocated to a local park. In 2012, having lost its original purpose and being on the 'wrong side' of the River Elbe, it was moved to the #Fürstenwall promenade, just a stone's throw from the cathedral. Since then, the site has become a beloved open-air location, hosting events, a beer garden, and seasonal markets, while preserving its historical ambiance and connection to the Elbe River and the city's green spaces.

#Fürstenwall ("duke's wall") for #FootpathFriday. This lime tree #avenue in #Magdeburg is right behind Magdeburg Cathedral, connecting it to Kloster Unser Lieben Frauen, a former monastery that's now an art museum.

I was playing around (unsuccessfully) with tilt-shift mode on my camera while standing in front of the Kiek in de Köken tower, which I posted about earlier today. Some time after erecting Kiek in de Köken and the other defensive towers, they were connected by fortified city walls. The space between the double walls was filled in after the people of Magdeburg used it to dump their waste, creating a wide walkway.

In the early 1700s, the site was no longer used as fortifications and was rebuilt to house gardens, private living quarters, parks, and enterprises. It was one of Germany's first public esplanades and offers a great view over the River Elbe.

I saw this a-door-able #door in #Magdeburg the other day and found it a real hoot! 🦉

Look at that #doorHandle! 😍

I found out that a famous ophthalmologist opened his clinic here in 1882, I assume the door design was inspired by this eye clinic. Today the listed building houses the Architectural Association of Saxony-Anhalt, a firm of financial advisers, and more.
