As Trump threatens to takeover Chicago, I'm reminded of a truly revolutionary film from 1973 that was set there, The Spook Who Sat by the Door. A film the FBI found so threatening that they removed prints from theaters where it was showing. Often lumped in with blaxploitation cinema, it stands apart from those films in terms of its radical politics as it confronts tokenism and depicts an armed uprising. Still scarily relevant for our times over 50 years laters it remains a must watch for cinephiles, revolutionaries and anyone concerned with resistance. Yet to hit most streaming services but you can find decent copies on YouTube.

No.813: "The time is October..."
Lord knows where Something Weird dredged up 'Passion In The Sun' from, but this 1964 'Roughie' is far out. Cuban gangsters kidnap a stripper with a bizarrely long sequence of her fighting one of them in a moving car. This is followed by an absurdly long stripper/gangster/cop chase sequence with a bass-driven soundtrack so repetitive that it wouldn't be out of place on an OM album.
Believing that she's got away, our heroine then goes skinny-dipping for no apparent reason! Oh, and the action is punctuated by sequences of strippers on stage. Nothing to do with the plot. Just strippers stripping. Oh and just to add some horror to the mix, there's an escaped circus freak to terrorise our young lovely.
I thought I knew what 60s American trash cinema was, but this is the absolute trashiest. It's a time capsule of sleaze so profound that it's almost art.

Just received this from PM Press @pmpress@kolektiva.social Andrew Nette and Sam Deighan have crafted a brilliant compendium of post-war political cinema from France, Japan, Germany, Iran, Hong Kong, Egypt, Czechoslovakia and more that places highly regarded directors like Godard and Costa-Gavras alongside maligned genres like Spaghetti Westerns, Poliziotteschi, Blaxploitation and Rape / Revenge and contextualizes them within the often violent political resistance and liberation movements happening off screen. Full color film posters and stills are placed next to contributions from film historians and critics and discussions of events like the Vietnam War , the rise of Feminism and postcolonial struggles. Films discussed include personal favorites and many hard to find gems I can't wait to discover!
