The reason why I have always categorically refused to call myself an #expat is that an #expatriate lives in a constant tristesse of never quite accepting that they are a foreigner and an immigrant, seeking authenticity to their existence by constantly defining themself as a non-tourist. Whether they write about #Berlin, #Madrid, #Paris, or #Tokyo, their essays are interchangeable if you just replace the place names and the scattered words of the local language ('Look, I understand these concepts so well that no translation conveys their meaning as I want to employ it.') And I bet this guy, too, when he finally leaves Tokyo, writes a long #essay about why he left Tokyo, as a statement of his disillusionment and his authenticity as a non-tourist.
