Grmpf, not the best day. Excavator was in the way of something else, so I drove it out, decided to do some quick jobs to charge the battery up and then parked it outside the barn. Upon turning the key again, nothing at all, not even the solenoid clicking.
Keyswitch ok, battery ok, so I had to trace wires (no diagram, although it's not complicated) until finding the culprit: A failed crimp on a ring terminal where the instrument wiring connects to the starter/battery plus.
Easy fix, put everything back together, two hours down the drain. 😮💨

Some work near the front gate. Managed to extract those concrete beams without harming the junipers.
Now to haul them away. Only the smallest one could go on the hand cart.
Having learnt my lesson, I sifted through the soil below anything I remove and was not disappointed. Several bricks, rocks, plastic scraps, two glass perfume bottles and of course a bunch of steel (harrow tines).
Let's see if I can get the rosehip out of there alive and relocate it, too.

I got to run the excavator today! I've never been formally trained, but I did this enough when I was younger that it came back to me after a few minutes. Perks of having a dad who was an industrial contractor - I got to play with actual earthmoving equipment as a kid.
Two joysticks control the bucket, body rotation, and arm, another two sticks connected to foot pedals run the treads, and there's a lever to lift/lower the front blade (which you can't really see here, but you'll need it down for stability).
I would *love* to own one of these myself, since I need to do a ton of work on my own property. But I just can't justify the price tag (about $25k used) unless I could also generate some income with it. Which is a possibility, at least within my neighborhood... Hmm...
Via Lietuva (the national road management company) apparently "lost" a large excavator down a 12m deep glacial sinkhole during reconstruction of the Moletai-Vilnius motorway.
And then somehow managed to keep this out of the press since spring, only now appearing in the news.
The excavator is still in that hole, full of diesel and hydraulic oil, next to a (also glacial) lake. Nobody knows how to get it out and they've had half a year to think about it.
Luckily the operator wasn't in the machine while this happened.

Pee bush root removal.
A real struggle, dug a meter down and it still wouldn't budge. Had to leap into the hole and start chopping roots with an axe and dirt underneath with a pickaxe. Then tear around with the bucket until it finally moved.
I expected to find a pot of gold buried under there, but no luck.
Filled back in and thrown some grass seed on, not that it's needed, but we had some laying around. Will throw some grass mulch on top soon.
