Day 5 - #Everglades Trip - Trail's End
We got up early and were off by dawn just as the outgoing tide went slack.
#Chokoloskee Island came into view at the mouth of the Lopez River. Later we passed the Smallwood Store where the infamous Mr. Watson was killed in 1910… (see novel "Killing Mister Watson" by Peter Matthiessen).
All and all it was a great trip! 👍

Day 4 - #Everglades Trip - Lopez River
I had stopped there for lunch but never stayed overnight. The primary site was taken, so we took the secondary. Both sites have nice deep shell mound approaches. We sat down by the water while we ate our dinner and finished our box of wine, with a breeze and cooler temps so bugs were few.

Day 3 (Continued) - Sweetwater Chickee
I woke up at 2am and laid awake in my hammock trying to get back to sleep. Then I became aware of wet, sonorous breathing in the water about 20 feet away! The pattern became obvious… 2-3 breaths then nothing for 10-15 min, then repeat in exactly the same place. An #alligator stalking us?!
It turned out to be a #Manatee!
They sleep on the bottom and rise to breathe several times an hour. 🙂

Day 3 - #Everglades Trip - Sweetwater Chickee
As the name implies, this campsite is far enough from the Gulf that the water is mostly fresh (aka "Sweet"). As such it is a haven for #Alligators. The ~8ft gator shown here was extra friendly, which means some idiot(s) had been feeding it! Much more dangerous...

How to tie the #ScaffoldKnots I used on my recent #Everglades2023 trip.
This is an extremely useful adjustable loop (aka "noose") knot that will resist loosening!
Note the orange pencil is there just to highlight the three loops through which you pass the working end to finish the knot!

Aside: My old Hobie MirageDrive® decided to fail by this point. The second photo shows my evolving field repairs. #DuctTape failed after an hour, so I switched to rope. The ultimate solution... bits of plastic water bottle secured with #scaffoldknots.
