Yesterday I wrote about Europe’s dependence on foreign payment systems and the dream of sovereignty. Many say it’s impossible.

But China proved it can be done for 1 billion people. Their solution? UnionPay as a state-backed card network, WeChat Pay and Alipay for QR-based payments, local NFC standards, and - let’s be honest - autocracy made rapid, forced adoption much easier.

European payment sovereignty doesn’t exist. The current system is built on Visa, Mastercard, Google Pay, and Apple Pay - complex, opaque, and controlled by non-EU entities. I only grasp the basics.

To replace them in 5-10 years, we’d need open NFC standards, an EU-wide card network (like EPI/Wero), digital euro adoption, and global partnerships to ensure acceptance.

Do you think, it is feasible and neccessary?

Yesterday I posted on Mastodon that the US export-control decision around Anthropic’s Fable 5 / Mythos 5 models showed why AI sovereignty is important.

Today I came across Cory Doctorow’s article, “AI digital sovereignty risk doesn’t exist,” which seems to argue against exactly my point.

And I think he may be right about many things. But I am not sure he is right about everything.

Many distrust AI as such. But I suspect that for many, the deeper issue is Big Tech control. I do see the positive potential of AI — but only with proper control, based on European values: security, openness, privacy and accountability.

The Anthropic case shows why this matters: critical AI access can become a foreign policy decision. We need European AI solutions developed and operated under democratic oversight.
