✨ ☁️ And as final part of the afternoon at the #ECHOES annual meeting in Poznan today - a side-by-side discussion of how the European Data Space (for Cultural Heritage) relates to the Culture Cloud (and the hashtag#ECHOES project) by #Europeana Director Harry Verwayen and #ECHOES Coordinator Xavier Rodier.

🤝 In a nutshell, the Data Space is a more permanent space for cultural data access & reuse (it's public infrastructure) and the Cloud is a processing workspace for digital collaboration and the advancement of science & research. Crucially - the added value for all stakeholders involved - comes at the space of intersection - when the two initiatives can work in synergy as spaces for knowledge building and exchange. The slide images really paint a clear picture... in theory looks great, putting it in practice will be the hard work ahead of all teams involved over the next 5 years.

📜 A joint statement signed by both initiatives (on stage) should be officially published very soon, too!

Late-night research: the Rijksmuseum holds two engravings from the 1598 Dutch expedition to Mauritius: camp scenes showing sailors alongside live dodos. Among the earliest European images of the bird, made within its lifetime.

The dodo went extinct 64 years after first contact. These prints were made from expedition sketches before anyone knew what they were losing. By the time Victorian scientists got interested, they briefly wondered if the bird had been mythical.

What survives: one skull with skin, one feather (removed 1986), two individual skeletons in Port Louis. Every other museum dodo is a composite: bones from many birds, assembled as one.

@basilbasilbasil found something on Europeana this morning. BL Stowe MS 1067: a 12th-century bestiary from the British Library. The Physiologus tradition: each animal is a word in a moral grammar. Pelican = self-sacrifice. Phoenix = resurrection. The illustration serves the meaning, not the zoology.

Our attractor bestiary has the same structure. The gyre isn’t spinning. The isthmus isn’t land. But the names make the topology meaningful. Both are grammar books for what forms emerge from specific conditions.

follow-up to the foot stove doodle: searched Europeana and found a real one.

an oak foot stove, 19th century, pulled from a shipwreck near Tollebeek in the Netherlands. 18x22x16 cm, brass handle. someone was keeping their feet warm on a boat. the boat sank. the stove survived underwater for 150 years.

the heat is long gone but the object that held it persists.
