Europe's Future: Report Looks at Big World Changes

What next for Europe?

Global South always knew US is a bully state and their intention is to establish their hegemony across the globe. It didn't matter who the US president was, for them to expand their imperialistic dreams post cold war. However Europe (ie. their leaders) never seem to have understood this (or pretended to ignore it). But Trump has spilled the beans now and made clear his intent to annex Greenland and tariff European nations if they don't support him, and Europe and it's leaders are in a rude shock. The level of the shock is so extensive, you can see it in the very incoherent responses of the European leaders, ranging from appeasement of Trump to bewildered reactions.

With his action what Trump has effectively done is to create a schism within NATO and it's high time Europe think their next steps. This what I think they should end up doing.

1. Dismantle NATO immediately. NATO was formed as security arrangement during the cold war and after Soviet Union's dissolution NATO should have been dismantled just like the Warsaw Pact. However US continued with NATO and expanded it to establish it's hegemony and threaten Russia. All of Europe just blindly followed. Now it's clear that the major allay of NATO is turning out to be the biggest threat for other NATO members, it's high time get rid of it. This would also help solve one major issue Europe is worried about, the Ukraine war, as NATO is one of the major thorn for this war and getting rid of NATO should help resolve this war quickly.

2. Europe need a security arrangement, but instead of looking up at US, they should create a broader pan-european agreement on security cooperation including Russia. Given Russia has a large military and nuclear ammunition should help keep the geopolitical threats Europe would face (mainly from US and it's allay Israel) at bay.

3. Europe should get into a larger economic and trade relationship across Asia, Africa and other countries in the global south. This should be an inclusive and mutually beneficial pact across all major countries in these regions, Russia, China, India, Brazil etc..This would help both Europe and the Global south to prosper and eliminate the dependency for technology, energy and raw materials for Europe and create a bigger impact for global economy and reduce the inequality across globe.

4. Europe should stop their support for US and their allay Israel's Gaza genocide and stand firm on creating a Palestine nation.

Essentially Europe need to come out of their vassal state stand with America and align with global south for economic growth and prospects and align with Russia to establish a security infrastructure for themselves.

Europe: A Power in Search of Itself

Is the European Union redefining itself, or is it simply getting lost in an arms race beyond its control?

We are at a turning point: Europe is shifting toward a more military, more strategic political project… yet paradoxically, it remains just as dependent as before. €800 billion has been allocated to rearmament without real democratic debate, and a significant portion of this budget will go directly to American industries.

Few media outlets address this head-on: is this massive militarization pushing Europe toward a security-driven identity at the expense of its democratic and social principles?

- The Paradox of Sovereignty
Europe wants to protect itself, but how can we talk about sovereignty when our weapons come from across the Atlantic? As Jürgen Habermas pointed out, the EU was built on technocratic governance, often disconnected from democratic debate. This decision is a clear illustration of that: European citizens had no say in it.

- War as a Political Project?
Carl Schmitt reminds us that states define themselves by designating an enemy. Today, Russia plays that role for the EU, justifying massive militarization. But can a political entity define itself solely through opposition to an external threat?

History shows that great powers emerge through inclusive strategic choices, not just through fear and military escalation. By reinforcing an opaque security model, Europe risks drifting away from its founding ideals.

- Europe in a Permanent State of Exception?
In State of Exception, Giorgio Agamben explains how crises are used to extend emergency policies. One might think that Europe is building an independent defense force, but in reality, it is institutionalizing fear as a development strategy.

Does this militarization truly protect us, or does it lock us into an escalating cycle of tensions?

Far from being a step toward independence, this massive arms buildup rests on three illusions:

The illusion of sovereignty → By funding our dependence on the U.S., we are not gaining autonomy.
The illusion of democratic legitimacy "No public consultation, no meaningful debate."
The illusion of peace through strength → More weapons have never guaranteed long-term stability.

So, does Europe genuinely aspire to be an independent power, or is it content to serve as NATO’s strategic outpost on the continent?
