“Therianthropes cannot be treated by veterinarians, they must go to doctors”: The Portuguese Medical Order intervenes with a protocol for people who identify with animals.
Perhaps you won’t remember, but we at FqMagazine spoke to you about this trend (“therian”) of young people and adolescents who identify psychologically or spiritually with non-human animal species. The issue has now gone beyond the confines of social networks to reach medical clinics. As reported by Euronews, the Portuguese Order of Veterinarians (OMV) officially intervened by issuing internal directives to prohibit its professionals from visiting, diagnosing, or treating humans, including those who identify as animals.
The Directives of the Order and Legal Limits
The intervention by the Portuguese regulatory body unequivocally reaffirms the legal boundaries of the profession. The new guidelines state that veterinarians are not authorized to perform any clinical acts, prescribe treatments, or make diagnoses on people, regardless of their perceived identity. The OMV, also cited by Correio da Manhã, highlights a fundamental legal principle: according to the law, anyone who identifies as an animal remains legally a human being. Consequently, healthcare for these individuals remains the exclusive competence of doctors and human health professionals. The protocol issued by the OMV provides clear instructions on how to behave in a clinic: if a veterinarian receives a request for consultation from a “therian,” they are required to maintain a respectful and informative approach. The professional must explain the legal limits of veterinary medicine and refer the person to appropriate healthcare services. The objective of the measure is to prevent ethical violations and remove any ambiguity within the clinical system.
Clinical Prevention and Viral Videos
The OMV’s decision was born as a proactive action, following international news disseminated by international media outlets, including CNN Portugal, regarding young people abroad seeking assistance at veterinary clinics. Currently, there are no confirmed cases or official reports of Portuguese veterinarians receiving similar requests in their practices. Similarly, internationally, there are no verified clinical records of “therians” being treated as animals. The measure was triggered by the spread of viral videos and posts on online platforms, in which individuals visit veterinary clinics in an attempt to be examined. In these widely shared social media videos, doctors explain that their services are reserved exclusively for animals and refuse the service. Although these are anecdotal episodes, the great visibility obtained online has prompted regulatory authorities to clarify matters to legally protect veterinary practice.
The spread of the phenomenon on TikTok and canceled gatherings
The concept of “therian,” derived from “teriantropia,” defines those who experience a strong internal identification with an animal species, and is framed as a self-described identity rather than a psychiatric diagnosis or medical condition. The popularity of the phenomenon has exploded on TikTok, where young users film themselves wearing masks or accessories and imitating the behavior of wolves, foxes, cats, or bears. The impact of this trend has had concrete repercussions in Portugal as well. In February, an informal meeting was organized in Vila Real to allow these young people to socialize, but the event was canceled by the organizers due to a strong wave of public protests. The growth of this social dynamic among adolescents remains now under the close observation of mental health and behavior experts.
