Just completed a 2 hour drive around the area, to see what’s happening, what’s open etc.
The amount of #fallentrees was an eye opener! There were crews clearing roads, chain sawing fallen #eucalypts etc.
Did I sleep through a #weatherevent?
We also saw LOTS of #dogs being walked. Public holidays must be walkies time.
New (edit:typo 🙈) gum leaves can be so different between the various kinds.
Resilient.

#Australia's #Gumtrees / #Eucalypts / Teatrees do their own version of spraying the paving with weedkiller.
They drop lots of bark, branches and leaves, all of which contain plant growth-inhibitors. #EucalyptusOil being the most widely know.
This reduces both competition and unfavourable soil changes.
I saw the word #Dross being applied to this dropped material. But with gbbgle having stuffed the net can't find the site.
Below is a pic showing newly fallen bark on top of older dross.
Cutting last year's growth from Eucalyptus cloeziana (Gympie Messmate) pollards. This was an experiment to grow what is usually very large trees into a small area for pole/post (and biomass) production. Could also be a technique for growing Eucalypts in urban yards if one was so inclined.
The thicker prunings are used for fuel/biochar production with the leaf and twigs used for mulch below these stems.
Tree hidey-holes key to helping slow declines of small mammals

Nestbox use indicates declining arboreal #mammals in an Australian savanna may be limited by tree hollow availability https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0378112724002275
"to slow declines and stop extinctions of hollow-using #animals in northern #Australia, protecting large #savanna #eucalypts as ecosystem assets would be critical"
