Jazztodon artist of the week: Etta Jones!
From @aaj : Etta Jones was born in South Carolina, but brought up in Harlem. She entered the famous talent contest at the Apollo Theatre as a 15 year old, and although she did not win, she was asked to audition for a job with the big band led by Buddy Johnson. Etta stayed with Johnson's big band for a year. In 1947, she sang the big band led by drummer J.C. Heard and next with Earl Hines. She also worked for Barney Bigard, Stuff Smith, Sonny Stitt, and Art Blakey, but she went into a period of virtual obscurity from 1952-59.
In 1960, she had a solo hit with "Don't Go To Strangers." In 1968, at a Washington, D.C. gig, Etta met tenor saxophonist. They formed a partnership that lasted over 30 years. They were married for a time, and he became her manager, and produced most of her subsequent records.

Musical Interlude: I rarely hear this song, which I first heard on a jazz station in WV many many years. It's what started my fondness for Christmas sass.
"It's Christmas Time," performed by Etta Jones.
