@waeiski Unfortunately, #Ethnologue is the only comprehensive database that provides polygon shapefiles for the spread of languages – at that is behind a high paywall. If you come across any database providing those openly, we would be very happy to know!

Has anybody used #Glottolog data?

It is a database of languoids, that is, it contains information on dialects, languages and language families globally, their geographical "ranges", and inter-language relations, and has potential for some pretty cool analyses. Awesome #OpenData for sure. However, I am unsure how it compares to #WALS or #Ethnologue data.

As per #Ethnologue catalog, there are over 7000 living languages worldwide. Only 320 (less than 5%) of these languages have representation across #Wikimedia projects, including #Wikipedia. How do we create new language editions? #WikimediaIncubator ⬇️

#Mandarin, #English, #Spanish and #Hindi are currently both the languages with the greatest number of native speakers as well as of overall speakers according to #Ethnologue (the order varies on each ranking). Between this and the notion of an interconnected world, my hot take is that we can't expect to treat these languages forever in terms like "native" vs. "foreign" experiences as their scope will inevitably broaden further in years to come. #language #globalization #sociolinguistics.

Just killing the #Ethnologue from my linked resources list, they now grant access only with paid plans.
