Boston election Nov. 4 2025: District 9 endorsements
Tomorrow is a municipal election in the city of Boston. Municipal elections matter. If you live in Boston you should be voting in every primary, every preliminary election, every election, every year.
Here are my endorsements for tomorrowâs election in District 9 and city-wide.
Michelle Wu is running unopposed, so whether you vote for her doesnât âmatterâ in the sense that it will not influence the outcome of the race. For that, I hope you voted in the preliminary election in September! In any case, you should vote for her anyway to let her know you support her. She has been a good mayor and she deserves your support.
In the District 9 City Council race, you should vote for Liz Breadon. Her opponent, Pilar Ortiz, is both decent and competent, and I look forward to voting for her in the future when she is the best candidate on the ballot, but as for this year, Liz is doing a good job and has been on the Council long enough to form important experience, connections, and alliances that Pilar doesnât have. A little bit of inside baseball: a lot of people in Pilarâs orbit, including Mayor Wu whose administration she worked in, told her this was not the time for her to run, but for some reason that is frankly inexplicable to me, she didnât listen.
In the at-large City Council race, I am voting for Henry Santana, Marvin Mathelier, Ruthzee Louijeune, and Julia Mejia. Henry, Ruthzee, and Julia are all incumbents who have proven themselves decent and competent. Erin Murphy and Frank Baker are Trump-supporting chuds whom I wouldnât vote for under any circumstances. I have nothing in particular against Will Onuoha or Alexandra ValdezâI think theyâd probably do fineâbut Mathelier has been endorsed by both Liz and Ruthzee, and I trust them and want them to have the allies they want on the Council to help them continue to make progress on their objectives, which I support.
By the way, itâs not a coincidence that none of the people Iâm endorsing are white men.

Here are my endorsements for the 2023 City of Boston City Council election on Tuesday, November 7. Please vote!
City Councillor-at-Large
I will be voting for:
Yes, you can vote for up to four candidates, and yes, I am only endorsing three. None of the other candidates deserves your vote. If you feel like you absolutely must use your fourth vote, then Shawn Nelson is the least bad of the other candidates.
Anti-endorsements:
District 3
Iâm not in District 3, but if I were voting there, I would vote for Joel Richards. His opponent, John FitzGerald, is very much an establishment candidate, and FitzGerald was endorsed by the BPPA.
District 5
Iâm not in District 5, but if I were voting there, I would vote for Enrique PepĂ©n. He has good experience and good endorsements, and his opponent Jose Ruiz is endorsed by, among others, Erin Murphy and the BPPA.
District 6
D6 has the luxury this year of choosing between two decent candidates. Having said that, Benjamin Weber has been endorsed by several grassroots progressive organizations, so if I were voting in D6 Iâd lean toward voting for him.
District 7
If I were in D7, then Tania Fernandes Anderson would earn my vote for numerous reasons, most notably:
District 8
If I were in D8, Iâd vote for Sharon Durkan, because sheâs a good candidate and because Montez Haywood is endorsed by the BPPA.
District 9
I live in D9, and I will be voting again for Liz Breadon. Liz has earned my vote by being an effective advocate for her district, making a difference on policies we care about, getting stuff done, and being on the âright side of historyâ numerous times in the turbulence that has roiled the City Council during her tenure there. I donât agree with everything sheâs said and done, but on balance I am happy with her representation.
Jacob deBlecourt is a nice person who I agree with on many things, but heâs green, and he isnât going to represent D9 better than Liz. I hope this election helps position him to run for office successfully in the future against a candidate he deserves to beat.
