As the #US careens toward an increasingly #authoritarian state of affairs, the #book #OnTyranny by #TimothySnyder, becomes increasingly relevant. Book Review: Two Books for a Time of Emergent Tyranny

This last week, maybe the worse in recent international politics, reminds me of Erik Larson's book, ‘The Splendid and the Vile’, a deep dive into Churchill’s trouble getting the US to help the UK (took Pearl Harbor to get us involved 🤔)

Will it take WWIII to get the US back on track?

*Sigh* After waiting several weeks for “The Demon of Unrest” by Erik Larson (a favorite author) at our library, I finally had it in my hands by late August. But with 18 holds on it behind me I couldn’t renew it & had too much going on to be able to finish it before it was due back today. It’s SO good (as all #ErikLarson #books are, IMO) & was hard to part with! Now I’m #19 in line for it. 😫
I’d just buy it, but there’s a moratorium on new books at Chez Laloofah! 📚 😜 📚

The Demon of Unrest - Erik Larson

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Splendid and the Vile brings to life the pivotal five months between the election of Abraham Lincoln and the start of the Civil War—a slow-burning crisis that finally tore a deeply divided nation in two. On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

Just finished Devil in the White City by Erik Larson after a reader of my Morning Coffee Trivia recommended it to me (question about the first Ferris Wheel).

@tanquist @bomkatt This is a REALLY good book. “Thunderstruck” and “Isaac’s Storm” (by the same author) are also really good. Though they are nonfiction, they read like fiction. Gripping.
