Popular #Linux orgs #Freedesktop and #AlpineLinux scrambling for new hosting as #EquinixMetal (formerly #Packet.Net) shift away from bare-metal servers leaves groups looking for new homes.
#Equinix announced recently that it was sunsetting its bare-metal sales and services, or renting out physically distinct single computers rather than virtualized and shared hardware.

@ellie seriously! if you water cool it, you can push the hot water right into your radiators to keep the house warm!

seriously, cooling is a big part of data center design. My coworker at #EquinixMetal wrote this up about cooling at data center scale:

https://metal.equinix.com/blog/sustainable-data-center-design-liquid-cooling-vs-air-cooling/

"A 40mm 29,500/25,500 rpm contra-rotating fan, aka β€œmini-jet,” uses 30.24W (2.52A at 12V). Fans in a typical 1RU system running at full load consume 241.92W."

Well, I lasted about 4 days. But here I am, attempting to get a Mastadon instance spun up on #flatcar and #equinixmetal.

Absolutely no intention of running my own instance, but I just want to see if I can get this working. Which really just describes about half the things I do.

Ah, that new instance smell.

On this instance, I'll plan to write about all #kubernetes all the time. That might not be a lot of posting.

I'm very intrigued by the effort it's going to take to put Mastodon, which is a bit of a monolith / megalith, onto Kubernetes. A promising story I have been told involves scaling with #knative which sounds plausible.

I am also @w8emv (Ann Arbor local stuff), @w8emv (ham radio stuff), and @w8emv (general tech stuff). + others too.
