FT article that references #AudioEye, #accessiBe, #UserWay (#LevelAccess), and #EqualWeb along with #overlays in general:

While it mischaracterizes the crappy algorithms as ‘AI’, the output is still shitty for users regardless of branding.

"Blind internet users struggle with error-prone AI aids", reports an article in the Financial Times: https://www.ft.com/content/3c877c55-b698-43da-a222-8ae183f53078 #FT has a paywall but three articles can be accessed for free if you register. TLDR is that AI #accessibility widgets over promise and under deliver. Repeatedly. #AI #GenerativeAI #a11y

I appreciate that IAAP and the European Disability Forum essentially said #overlays are shit back in May:
https://www.edf-feph.org/accessibility-overlays-dont-guarantee-compliance-with-european-legislation/

But IAAP allows overlays as members, so it kind of undercuts the message (and assures I will not join).

Which is why I am happy the European Commission has confirmed #overlays are shit:

I am glad Meetup removed the #EqualWeb overlay. This is progress.

However, Meetup asking for free labor is not. Meetup paid a problematic vendor, but does not place the same value on lived experience.

Keeping account canceled.

Meetup.com Accessibility Overlay Update

In recent weeks, WordPress meetup organizers expressed their disappointment in Meetup.com’s new accessibility overlay, and brought this to the attention of the Community Team. Since then, @peiraiso…

Overlays are always a problem, and this example demonstrates how #EqualWeb creates a less accessible and WCAG-violating experience:

Interesting thread re. #a11y overlay on meetup.com. Overlay [EqualWeb] is visible in private windows but not regular.

This is because it's being blocked (good) by #uBlockOrigin.

But if you view src on Meetup, EqualWeb's CDN URL never shows up - because they OBFUSCATE it.

So #EqualWeb KNOWS what they're doing is perceived as wrong.

Meetup is using #EqualWeb.

I spotted a contrast failure immediately.

But the “Press enter for Accessibility for blind people” button which puts positive `tabindex` values on text nodes is such a trip.

Example:
