@rightardia The Epic of Gilgamesh and the Bible have fascinating parallels, especially the flood story. In Gilgamesh (written around 2100 BCE), Utnapishtim is warned by the gods to build a boat and save animals from a massive flood, just like Noah in the Bible’s Genesis (written around 500–600 BCE). Both stories feature a divine warning, an ark, and a great flood. But while the Bible presents a monotheistic view, Gilgamesh involves multiple gods.

As far back as we have literary reports -- beginning with the #EpicofGilgamesh, our earliest surviving narrative, written centuries before the oldest accounts of the #Bible -- humans have feared #death more than almost anything.
Many people fear the process of #dying; others #fear facing #eternaltorment; yet others fear the void, the idea of #nonexistence.

Misquoting Jesus with Bart Ehrman - The Omnipresent Fear of Death

As far back as we have literary reports -- beginning with the Epic of Gilgamesh, our earliest surviving narrative, written centuries before the oldest accounts of the Bible -- humans have feared death more than almost anything. Many people fear the process of dying; others fear facing eternal torment; yet others fear the void, the idea of non-existence. In this episode we talk about ancient reflections on death and about why some stalwart souls insisted that in fact there was nothing to fear.

As your day is ending, why not join me, sit around my imaginary campfire, and listen to a sung tablet from the #EpicOfGilgamesh in the #Akkadian language? :-)

The excellent Peter Pringle performing another episode from #Gilgamesh, namely Enkidu and Shamkat. Although it's a #Sumerian #epic, most of what we know survives from #cuneiform tablets written in #Akkadian and #OldBabylonian, and this one is sung in the latter. He accompanies himself on the #saz and sampled #zurna controlled by foot keyboard. Like usual, there's a good description and summary of the part in the video description. And again, this is not a reconstruction of ancient #music, but an interpretation.

About 20 years ago, I had the mp3s for music about ancient Sumeria. I don’t remember the artist, but one of the songs on the album was called “We Are All One” and contained such lyrics as “Good people of Uruk, obey my voice” and “the fate of Uruk as I demand.” I can’t find these songs anywhere, and a lyric search turns up nothing on search engines. Anyone know who the artist is and where I can find the album? #EpicOfGilgamesh #Gilgamesh #Uruk #Sumerian #Music
