EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin used the keynote address at a Heartland Institute conference to applaud the Trump administration’s repeal of the 2009 “endangerment finding,” a scientific determination that had served as the legal foundation for federal climate‑change regulations. Calling the move a “moment to celebrate vindication,” Zeldin said the reversal undid “decades of unthinking adherence” to policies he described as driven by liberal politicians and environmental groups. The 2009 finding had classified carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases as a threat to public health, underpinning emissions standards for power plants, vehicles and other sources.
The speech provoked sharp criticism from environmental organizations, which accused Zeldan of “rallying climate deniers” and promoting disinformation. Joe Bonfiglio of the Environmental Defense Fund denounced the Heartland Institute as a “disinformation factory” and said Zeldan’s appearance signaled the Trump administration’s abandonment of its duty to protect the public from pollution. EPA spokesperson Carolyn Holran defended the agency, claiming it had returned to “gold‑standard science” and was no longer a vehicle for radical ideology, while also emphasizing that the agency’s focus remains on protecting human health and the environment.
The repeal eliminates federal greenhouse‑gas emission standards for cars and trucks and opens the door to broader rollbacks of climate regulations on power plants and oil‑and‑gas facilities. Legal challenges have already been filed by dozens of states, cities and environmental groups, arguing that the action violates the Clean Air Act. Critics warned that the rollback occurs as extreme weather events—such as record‑breaking heat domes, stronger hurricanes, and more intense wildfires—become increasingly common, underscoring the growing risks of unchecked climate change.
