Howard G. Smith MD, AM on Instagram: "Common contaminant a cancer risk for children NDMA , N-nitrosodimethylamine, is a nitrate byproduct found in processed and smoked meats, fish, cheese, and beer. It also contaminates water and led to the recall of certain medications including Zantac, metformin, and valsartan. Long linked to higher rates of childhood cancers, biological engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology now report in the journal Nature the reason it is devastatingly more dangerous for children than adults. Using a mouse model and studying NDMA’s effects on baby versus adult mice, they find that the more rapid cell division and growth in children produces early DNA damage that more often turns into permanent, cancer-causing mutations. The bottom line: do all you can to shield your children and grandchildren from NDMA exposures. Remember too that you are also vulnerable to its cancer-triggering effects. 🌍 Radon and indoor air quality don't get the policy attention they deserve. My colleague Alan Whitehead makes that case compellingly in a new article for the International Business Times.

Alan is one of the most trusted communicators in this field — if you follow radon or public health policy, this is worth your time.
