Via regular post today: information from the University of Potsdam that they have appointed somebody to the "Full Professorship (W 3) for Contemporary English Language".
Application deadline was April 30, 2023, and the position was supposed to be filled for the winter term 2024/25.
So, overall it has taken them 2 years and four month, and they lag behind their original schedule by one year. A solid achievement :), and a reminder that this aspect of out-of-control delays is also a part of the general #ichBinHanna problem in Germany.

It depends from what accent one is using, but yes definitely there are some U.K. accents where there's a difference, ranging in the vowel from /əʊ/ through /ə/ to even /əʊɜ/.

Interestingly, #Wiktionary's voice sample gives the third one for RP "thrown" making it 2 syllables, but doesn't actually transcribe it as such. I'm sure that Geoff Lindsey would have a field day. (-:

Do you pronounce “Ms” and “Miss” differently?

Would be cool if you replied to say where you’re from and what variety of English you speak too.

Some hard facts from the British National Corpus #BNC : of the 44 hits for "oddness", 16 come from the same source, which turns out to be D. A. Cruse's "Lexical Semantics" textbook from 1986. Which makes me wonder, not for the first time, whether it has been a good idea to include linguistic texts in the BNC sampling :)

I’ve been reading a really interesting #bookstodon thread where the issue came up of whether “-ette” is a universally belittling suffix (in #English), and it made me wonder if there are folks on here who are specifically interested in #EnglishLanguage, #EnglishLinguistics, and #EnglishUsage (sort of like the old USENET group alt.usage.english or the LinkedIn group #Grammar Geeks). I know there are collections of books folks, editors, linguists, etc., but anything like what I’m talking about?
