NRW Researchers to Exploit Quantum Technologies for Energy Grids

Energy grids in Germany and Europe are facing a radical transformation. Large fossil-fuel power plants are increasingly being replaced by renewable energies. This is accompanied by increasingly complex, intelligent networking, which requires computationally intensive control as well as increased levels of cyber security. Quantum technologies offer promising potential in this context. In the NRW project Qugrids, which is coordinated by Forschungszentrum Jülich, energy and quantum researchers now together investigate how this future technology can be used beneficially for the planning and operation of energy networks.

After all these decades, perhaps time for a dedicated national electric rail passenger service that we could catch up to Europe, Japan, and Asia, and while doing this, create the inter-provincial electric transmission lines we need to smooth disparate Provincial grids? BC to Newfoundland. Start with the Golden Horseshoe and expand from there.

Welcome! You are invited to join a meeting: The Energy Lab 2.0 at KIT - A Platform for Research on Future Energy Grids, Energy Storage and Synthetic Fuels. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the meeting.

By 2025, 80% of Germany's energy should be produced from renewable sources. However, wind or solar energy cannot be generated consistently everywhere. Energy is often needed far away from where it is generated, and peak loads can be expected at certain times. As Europe's largest research infrastructure for renewable energy, the Energy Lab 2.0 finds answers to all these questions. Here, the intelligent networking of environmentally friendly energy generators and storage methods are investigated. In addition, energy systems of the future are simulated and tested based on real consumer data. Another highlight is the Power-to-liquid plant with an optimized reactor design that combines synthesis gas generation from CO2 directly with fuel production. The HECTOR School hosts the presentation of KIT Professor Roland Dittmeyer, Director of the Institute for Micro Process Engineering (IMVT). Hear more about the Energy Lab 2.0 and Re-Fuels role in reaching the climate goals.
