Spoke too soon.
After the machine has been on for an hour or two, 100% of one core of CPU is used by the #xfce #panel wrapper. Specifically /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/xfce4/panel/wrapper-2.0 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/xfce4/panel/plugins/libpulseaudio-plugin.so 8
A force restart via systemctl --user restart pulseaudio.service (and socket) took CPU back to normal.
It hasn't happened again yet, but I've not rebooted either. Potentially there is some race condition on clean start that eventually catches up and causes this. Will need to see if I can reproduce in a VM.
I'm tempted to just start over and force myself over to #kde as that is where I feel the future of DE's and Apps are given the future outlook for further gtk4 stuff, plus upcoming gtk5
The problem is I would prefer to stay with #debian. But on #trixie as stable, #kde will get stale quickly given development progress. And #sid is a no for me.
Not so keen on #arch but it may be the way to go, either #endevourOS or #cachyOS
Amazing video promoting Linux customization. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFz5gLqv-FM
I've been assisting @gendodoggo migrating his PC over to #Linux over the last two days. His PC was already "not supported" by Windows 11 and will stop receiving updates entirely now. So he asked me to help with choosing a distro and setting it up
At first he wanted to dual boot, just to ease the transition, but Windows didn't want to shrink the partition because something something immovable files 🙄
After some fruitless faffing about we said fuck it, we ball, just wiped it clean and put #EndevourOS on it as the only OS. Surprisingly effortless, Nvidia with GNOME Wayland worked out of the box! We did run into some issues when the machine went into suspend and didn't come back up. We also had one or two system lock-ups I'm not entirely sure why they happened. We assume it's got to do with moving stuff around from the NTFS partitions, so we can reformat remaining drives to ext4
Either way, I'm glad he's giving Linux an honest shot (once more) and it spares me the trouble to figure out roundabout ways to do stuff on Windows that are really just a few commands on Linux 😝
Installed EndeavourOS with Gnome the other day and in general it's been fairly painless.
I have a vague feeling running something Debian rather than Arch based would be a bit more streamlined. A lot of apps (e.g. Discord, VS Code, Slack etc) are like "here is a .deb have fun, or a .tar good luck". So far I've actually been able to sort things out anyway though so maybe that's ok.
I like that it feels very clean from cruft.
