On May 8, 19-year-old Olivia Andre, who fled with her family from torture and abuse in the Congo, was released from Dilley Immigration center in Texas after six months.

The nursing student from Maine had been separated from her mother and two younger siblings who were released in March. The shackles she was forced to wear for long periods left scars on her wrists and ankles. Mental scars include insomnia, nightmares, depression and PTSD.

Release came after a federal district court ruled that Andre’s continued detention violated her
constitutional right to due process.

According to Congressman Joaquin Castro, the infant became unresponsive, and there was no doctor available when staff tried to seek help. It’s unconscionable that 5-yo Liam Conejo Ramos — taken from his family as he returned from preschool — has now been held for 5 DAYS in a Texas ICE detention center while his father pursues an active asylum case.

Detainees inside Dilley call the facility “a horrible, horrible place” with putrid water and meals with dirt and bugs, and say guards treat families like criminals. Can't imagine the trauma Liam's already experienced. This must stop. #FreeLiam #HumanRights #EndFamilyDetention
