Late August means shorter days and, apparently, shorter dogs.

Emerald Downs does a yearly event called the "Wiener Dog and Wannabe Races", where dachshunds and similar short-n-long dogs run a 40-50 yard race on the same track the horses use.  It's ridiculous, in the best possible way.  The dogs are not all quite on the same page about what's going on, so when the flag drops it's frequently chaos.  Short, fast, funny chaos.  Most of them finish!  Sometimes with a little encouragement and redirection, but still.

This was my second time attending, and first time bringing a real camera and longer lens.  I absolutely intend on doing it again next year.  A perfectly fine way to enjoy a late summer day.

There were also horses racing!  I was there for the puppers, but managed to get a few shots of the equine persuasion.

'T. rexes' race to photo finish at Washington state track

A track for live horse racing in suburban Seattle turned prehistoric over the weekend as more than 200 people ran down the track cloaked in inflatable Tyrannosaurus rex dinosaur costumes. The 2023 T-Rex World Championships at Emerald Downs on Sunday ended in a photo finish, with three competitors hitting the finish line together. Ocean Kim from Kailua, Hawaii, took top honors. The event started in 2017 as a pest control company’s team-building activity. Racers came from more than a half-dozen states to compete.
