Emancipation Day marked in Manitoba

Duckunoo, which means “sweet thing” in Jamaican Patois, is served as a dessert or snack, usually at cultural events, such as those happening during the current Emancipendence celebrations. The sweet treat originated in Ghana by the Asante people. Enslaved Africans brought it to the Caribbean.

The dessert is also known as Blue Draws (“draws” is Jamaican Patois for “drawers”), and the string around it refers to an era when cord was used to keep underwear secure.

On August 1st, we commemorate Emancipation Day, marking the abolition of slavery across the British Empire in 1834.

This day is a powerful reminder of the resilience and strength of Black communities and their enduring fight for freedom and equality.

Let's honour this day by reflecting on our history, educating ourselves, and continuing the work towards a more just and inclusive society✊🏿

Today is Emancipation Day, and that should be celebrated. But we still have a long way to go in order to rid ourselves of slavery. So yes let’s celebrate, but let us keep on fighting too for a better world of freedom, racial equality, and justice for all.

Today we honour and celebrate Emancipation Day across Canada. 191 years ago slavery was legally abolished in Canada and across the British Empire. So much has been done but so much more needs to be done to eliminate racism in our communities. #EmancipationDay

1873
hoezo 1873
