Do you have any friends from childhood still in your life?
Technically yes, but only because connections on Facebook are called ‘friends’. One of them I’ve known since we were about eight and the other from when we were about 10. Of course we drifted away, one during high school and the other about a year or two after high school. We became the Facebook version of friends just about two years ago which is also about the number of times we’ve chatted on Facebook in that time. I’m trying to decide if this makes me sad or not and it really doesn’t because people change and that’s just a fact of life.
I’m thinking about internet friends and I’m not sure they can be thought of as friends. It’s certainly a different friendship dynamic and I’d like to think yes, but experience has taught be to be doubtful and cautious.
What makes me said is thinking about a friend I had in 1972 and even though we drifted apart, we always stayed in touch. Until 2023 when he decided he didn’t want to be friends with anyone anymore.
