South-East London is a mystery to me, so I wouldn't have known that this little gorgeous gem of an art deco building exists just 30 minutes on the train from Charing Cross. Eltham Palace and Gardens once belonged to Virginia and Stephen Courtauld, who bought a ruined medieval castle that Henry VIII was raised in and turned it into a wonderful residence. It became famous for dinner parties and wonderful interiors that filled it. It became army quarters after the Courtaulds moved out, and its doors are now open to the public. Well worth a visit just to explore the story of the place focused on the couple - it's really and truly fascinating!
