Charles Laughton is stuck married to shrewish Rosalind Ivan. Ivan is even more horrible to Laughton than she was to Edward G. Robinson in SCARLET STREET. She's already driven their son away. Laughton moves into his son's room to escape her. At work, Laughton meets would-be job applicant Ella Raines (PHANTOM LADY). He has no work for her, but the lonely Laughton asks her to dinner. Depressed Alan Curtis finds himself alone in a bar. He has an extra ticket to a show and invites a mysterious woman (Fay Helm) to go along with him. She agrees but insist on no names. Aurora Miranda, the performer, is incensed to see the woman wearing the same supposedly unique hat as her.
