Charles Laughton is stuck married to shrewish Rosalind Ivan. Ivan is even more horrible to Laughton than she was to Edward G. Robinson in SCARLET STREET. She's already driven their son away. Laughton moves into his son's room to escape her. At work, Laughton meets would-be job applicant Ella Raines (PHANTOM LADY). He has no work for her, but the lonely Laughton asks her to dinner. They begin a platonic relationship. Laughton asks his wife for a divorce but she refuses, threatening to destroy his career. Laughton is forced to come clean to Ella and breaks it off. Ivan still

Aurora Miranda, the performer, is incensed to see the woman wearing the same supposedly unique hat as her. Curtis returns home only to find Inspector Burgess (Thomas Gomez) and two other cops (Regis Toomey and Joseph Crehan) waiting. Curtis' wife (who refused to divorce him) had been strangled.
