The NSA headquarters likely has a power plant that is enclosed in a large Faraday cage for EMP protection. The same Faraday cage could also enclose other electronic equipment to isolate them from the effects of an EMP blast.

Amazon sells "EMP Shield" 12v surge protectors for vehicles. I wonder if they work, and if so why aren't they installed by the factory? Seems like an option that a lot of people would go for if it were offered.

What happened to research on #ElectroMagneticPulse (EMP) anti-air and anti-drone defense?

Back in 2019 there was some interesting research and proof-of-concept that seems like a perfect match for todayโ€™s #Russia โ€œShaheedโ€ drone swarms

The paper in question does not detail the date and location of the test, nor the distance between the EMP weapon and the target, except to describe that a drone was shot down by an EMP weapon while flying at a height of 1,500 meters, Chinese media reported, citing the British newspaper Daily Mail. This is the first time China has tested this technology in its efforts to catch up with the United States.

The Daily Mail said the United States had demonstrated an EMP weapon, the Tactical High Power Microwave Operational Reactor, in 2019, which shot down 50 drones at once, demonstrating its ability to protect a military base from drone attacks.

AAAS: "Storied accelerator to test chips" Michigan State Universityโ€™s Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) announced last week that the worldโ€™s first, historic superconducting cyclotron will receive a new lease on life testing next-generation microchips. "From 1982 to 2020, the K-500 cyclotron produced beams of atomic nuclei ranging from hydrogen [element number 1, a reactive nonmetal] to uranium [element number 92, an actinide]  for experiments in nuclear physics, relying on superconducting magnets to confine the particles." In 2022 the cyclotron was superceded by FRIB's new, more powerful $730 million linear accelerator. Usually old particle accelerators are demolished or even broken down for parts to incorporate in the newer devices. 'But thanks to a $14 million grant from the Department of Defense, the refurbished K-500 will irradiate chips to see how they perform under challenging conditions resembling those in space.' To reverse the old adage, old wine in a new bottle, pretty inexpensive way to test microchips to figure out how to harden them not just for space, but also protection from an EMP or electromagnetic pulse, either from a coronal mass ejection from the Sun or an attack by nuclear weapons.   #physics    #electromagneticpulse

Is that an EMP Generator in Your Pocket or Is My Calculator Just Broken?

Ah, what fond memories we have of our misspent youth, walking around with a 9,000-volt electromagnetic pulse generator in our Levi's 501s and zapping all the electronic devices nobody yet carried with them everywhere they went. Crazy days indeed.

We're sure that's not at all what [Rostislav Persion] had in mind when designing his portable EMP generator; given the different topologies and the careful measurement of results, we suspect his interest is strictly academic. There are three different designs presented, all centering around a battery-powered high-voltage power module, the Amazon listing of which optimistically lists as capable of a 400,000- to 700,000-volt output. Sadly, [Rostislav]'s unit was capable of a mere 9,000 volts, which luckily was enough to get some results.

Coupled to a spark gap, one of seven different coils -- from one to 40 turns -- and plus or minus some high-voltage capacitors in series or parallel, he tested each configuration's ability to interfere with a simple pocket calculator. The best range for a reset and scramble of the calculator was only about 3โ€ณ (7.6 cm), although an LED hooked to a second coil could detect the EMP up to 16โ€ณ (41 cm) away. [Rostislav]'s finished EMP generators were housed in a number of different enclosures, one of which totally doesn't resemble a pipe bomb and whose "RF Hazard" labels are sure not to arouse suspicions when brandished in public.

We suppose these experiments lay to rest the Hollywood hype about EMP generators, but then again, their range is pretty limited. You might want to rethink your bank heist plans if they center around one of these designs.
