L’incident électrique d’hier nous apprend plusieurs choses.

Notre interdépendance européenne à l’électricité, tout d’abord. Je n’ai vu qu’une mention du fait que la Belgique et les Pays-Bas auraient également été impactés par la panne électrique massive en Espagne d’hier, mais la concomitance des évènements est en effet troublante, notre application Mastodon étant hébergée à Amsterdam.

La résilience d’un réseau fédéré comme Mastodon, ensuite. En effet, si notre serveur était HS, une majorité d’autres serveurs hébergés ailleurs étaient opérationnels.

Et cela confirme que ma stratégie de bâtir une infrastructure multi-localisée est la bonne : en effet, nous avons des services localisés chez deux hébergeurs dans cinq pays, tous dans l’UE (FR, NL, DE, AT, LT), selon les applications, médias, surveillance et sauvegardes. Cela garantit quasiment – et bien que cette hypothèse soit improbable – qu’en cas de problème majeur et définitif sur un pays ou sur un hébergeur, on pourra récupérer les services et données (même si cela pourra prendre plus ou moins de temps).

Yesterday’s power outage is providing us with several learnings.

Our European electrical interdependency, for one. I only saw one mention of potential impacts to Belgium and the Netherlands by the massive power failure in Spain yesterday, but the synchronicity of the two events is troubling, our Mastodon application being hosted in Amsterdam.

The resiliency of a federated network such as Mastodon, for another. In effect, if our server was down, a majority of other servers hosted elsewhere were operational.

And this confirms that my strategy in building an infrastructure multi-located is relevant: as such, we have services located at two hosters in five countries, all in EU (FR, NL, DE, AT, LT), depending on the application, for media, monitoring and backups. This almost guarantees that although very unlikely, should a major and permanent issue arise in a country or on a hoster, we should be able to resume all services and data (even though this could require some time).
