#AskFedi #electricians and electrically-literate folx:

How the hell can I have outlets at 80 VAC and below?

The building is wired for 100a. It has plenty of panel capacity. It has plenty of breakers. The wiring is probably 2016, mostly conduit.

Now, the previous owner was very flexible with color codes, and labeling was not his gig.

But how do you get some VAC but not all of it? Is there phase-swapping?

Needless to say, all my testing is breakers off and usually disconnected. Scary.

I need to mine the knowledge bank.

My kitchen light keeps going off. Sometimes it comes back on again after a second or so, sometimes it doesn't.

My husband thinks it's a light bulb issue, but if they were loose they wouldn't act in unison like this and if they needed replacing, they wouldn't act in unison like this and they would just be permanently burned out ... right?

I'm concerned that it's the fixture itself, or maybe the electricity. I'm worried that it's a potential fire hazard.

Anyone can boost for visibility, but please only weigh in if you're knowledgeable about these matters. Thank you.

TechSpot: AI data centers are delaying Texas housing projects by hiring away electricians. “The AI data center gold rush is now colliding with one of Texas’ other major problems: a shortage of homes. Builders say projects are taking up to two months longer to complete because data center operators are hiring away the electricians needed to wire new houses, duplexes, and apartments.”

I've got a wooden house. A new roof has gone on. After the removing of solar hotwater pipes, there is no longer any path to ground from the corrugated steel roof.
(How do I know? One of the screws cut into a cable and electrified the whole thing. No RCD tripped. Golly.)

Would you strap it to earth? To a sacrificial anode? Neither? What reasoning please? We live on top of a hill and have lovely thunderstorms.

Is it usual that domestic mains electricity in Spain isn't grounded?

We're getting it grounded at home, which I thought might be an anomaly, but now I'm in the library and getting the same tell-tale tingling sensation when running my fingers along the surfaces of my laptop.

The surge in demand for #AIdatacentres is creating lucrative career opportunities for skilled tradespeople. The scarcity of specialised talent, coupled with the need for retrofitting existing #datacentres and building new ones, is driving up wages for roles like #HVAC #engineers and #electricians. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/03/18/ai-data-center-buildout-jobs-salary-skilled-traders-worker-shortage.html?eicker.news #tech #media #news

Encourage and facilitate development in #EV #charging infrastructure to point its as easy to find and transparently priced as #petrol and #diesel

Price caps on EV charging points on motorways would help here. These are amazingly useful at the very high speeds: plug in the car, pop in for a quick biology break. But they're also 4x or more the cost of charging elsewhere. 2x would make EVs noticeably cheaper to drive long distances than petrol or diesel, but at the current motorway service station prices they're about the same and less convenient.

Invest in training and education of #mechanics (both for conventional and EV cars) and #electricians where private sector is lacking

Strengthening right-to-repair laws would also help: make sure that local mechanics can service these things without paying huge amounts.

If #GreenParty #UK wants to succeed, they need to reformulate #transport policy to offer more #carrots instead of sticks..

* Keep same timescale for bans of *new* #petrol and #diesel cars as rest of EU

* Encourage and facilitate development in #EV #charging infrastructure to point its as easy to find and transparently priced as #petrol and #diesel

* Invest in training and education of #mechanics (both for conventional and EV cars) and #electricians where private sector is lacking

And only *after* they have got power start advocating such things as full bans of #petrol / #diesel cars and #scrappage schemes - reality is many suburban motorists are going #electric anyway without having to push too hard, and 20 year old cars are often unrepairable due to lack of spare parts..
