I was underwhelmed by Elaine May's film "Mikey and Nicky", though it's something of a cult favourite, so it took me a while to return to her work. I'm glad I did:

"A New Leaf" and "The Heartbreak Kid" are comedy gems, somehow both goofy and darkish, and filled with great performances – by Walter Matthau, May herself, Jeannie Berlin (May's daughter), Charles Grodin...

Well worth seeking out if you haven't seen them.

🎬 The Birdcage (1996)

A hugely successful American remake of the classic French farce *La Cage aux Folles* (1978), itself based on Jean Poiret’s 1973 play, and the later sequels *La Cage aux Folles 2* and *La Cage aux Folles 3*. Mike Nichols’ film brings the story to Miami with Robin Williams & Nathan Lane navigating love, acceptance, and politics with big laughs and heart.

3 things about Elaine May’s A NEW LEAF [1971]

1. Two or three times a week.
2. “Marriage? You mean to a woman?”
“Yes, sir. That is what I had in mind. It’s the only way to acquire property without labor.”
3. Lost frond.

I could watch this film again and again if I wasn’t so devastated afterwards, Elaine May’s existential and heartbreaking masterpiece about friendship and masculinity, Mikey and Nicky. I’m always in awe of her direction and the superb performances by long-time personal friends John Cassavetes and Peter Falk. The film was shot entirely at night and the grain is crazy, but this is New Hollywood, so we don’t care.

“Elaine (May) was formidable… one of the most intelligent, beautiful, and witty women I had ever met. I hoped I would never see her again.”
