POV: you're heading into the Crisis of the Third Century
🪷 On 16 May we honour #Elagabalus, Rome's transgender teen emperor, who became Emperor on 16 May 218 AD, and who was assassinated by the Praetorian guard on 11 March 222 AD. Elagabalus reigned only four years, and was 18 years old when murdered, about the same age as #Antinous. We honour Elagabalus for bold religious reforms and as the Last of the Antonine Dynasty established by Trajan and Hadrian. In the second of this two-part special on #AncientRome, Thomas takes us through the current state of research on gender bending in the Ancient Roman world. We then quickly dive into the controversial case of the young Emperor #Elagabalus. What do the primary sources actually say, and what might they actually tell us about Roman attitudes towards gender boundaries and boundary crossers?

Content Warning: this episode mentions castration and human sacrifice.
