Another ekphrastic poem, a reflection upon visual arts, but this a bit more ironic in tone and topic!

My Mind is a Dawning

My mind is a dawning of a day unseen.
White and wise, Mother goose sky
searches her flanks for tiny specks
of dead skin, and underneath the sheet,
my covered breasts branch out
like half-submerged trees.

Pre-rising, my backside arches
upwards towards its peak.

What will become of me after my ascent,
the empty olive branch of memory?

A leaky house does not decieve the rain,
and stories carved in grain
like tattoos, fade eventually;
Even the ones on me

Iโ€™ve never seen.

After the dayโ€™s etchings
and mandatory chores,
before the turning overs
and snores,
the moon sings her planned encore,
and the stone in my stomach
dislodges easily.

Dam broke free, I drift in peace.

Still, or: Shabbat tables call

A Sijo

snowlight whitens the village roofs while burning windows glow askew; through rising smoke a wagon tilts while alleyways darken again; still our Shabbat tables call through centuries of ashes

dโ€™Verse: Donโ€™t box me in

At dโ€™Verse, we are encouraged to compose poems inspired by one of several paintings by the famous Jewish painter Marc Chagall (1887 โ€“ 1985). I selected โ€˜Burning Houseโ€™ (1913).

Sijo?

A Korean verse form related to haiku and tanka and comprised of three lines of 14-16 syllables each, for a total of 44-46 syllables. Each line contains a pause near the middle, similar to a caesura, though the break need not be metrical. The first half of the line contains six to nine syllables; the second half should contain no fewer than five. Originally intended as songs, sijo can treat romantic, metaphysical, or spiritual themes. Whatever the subject, the first line introduces an idea or story, the second supplies a โ€œturn,โ€ and the third provides closure. Modern sijo are sometimes printed in six lines.

Letโ€™s write poetry together!

When it comes to partnership, some humans can make their lives alone โ€“ itโ€™s possible. But creatively, itโ€™s more like painting: you canโ€™t just use the same colours in every painting. Itโ€™s just not an option. You canโ€™t take the same photograph every time and live with art forms with no differences.

โ€“Ben Harper (b. 1969)

Would you like to create poetry with me and have a completed poem of yours featured here at the Skepticโ€™s Kaddish? I am very excited to have launched the โ€˜Poetry Partnersโ€™ initiative and am looking forward to meeting and creating with youโ€ฆ Check it out!
