If @xmpp_providers are using #Debian stable, they have to upgrade #ejabberd to 24.12-3+deb13u2. It has the relevant patch by @holger to ignore the certificate purpose. It's currently in "proposed-updates" (yeah, Debian lingo).

As a happy long time #xmpp user I say xmpp. 🙂
#prosody based #snikket sounds perfect for the garden use case. For really big groups (city) you might prefer to host an #ejabberd. Of course usage characteristics matter more than sheer number of participants.

Since my new XMPP upload server implementation "Rusty Filer" has been working great on trashserver.net since two weeks, I present to you:

It has the same features as Prosody Filer, but it also available as a deb package and via a apt repository (for simple deployment and automatic updates!).

Ich finde es halt auch blöd, nicht für eine Weile rückwärtskompatibel zu bleiben. Nicht jeder will wartungsintensive bleeding edge rolling releases fahren.
Im Fall von #ejabberd weiß ich gerade nicht, ob das Verhalten von #letsencrypt vor zwei Jahren schon angekündigt war.

In case you're using the official ejabberd packages on Debian stable: They're affected by a recent CA policy change (e.g., Let's Encrypt), causing ejabberd to reject newly issued certificates and thereby breaking federation with some remote servers. Deploy this update to fix the issue:

You may also want to consider enabling mod_s2s_dialback to deal with remote servers that haven't been updated yet.
